Transportation: Getting Around Maui

Renting a car is highly recommended, especially for first-time visitors who want to explore beyond the resort-areas. Public transportation is limited and many of the Island’s best experiences require a vehicle.

My husband and I recently visited Maui and rented a car with pick-up and drop-off at the airport. A standard car is sufficient for most activities (we rented a Nissan Rouge) but if you are looking to explore a more rugged area, 4WD could be helpful.

Always a fill up on gas before long drives and check local road conditions, especially for Hana or Upcountry routes.

Accommodation: Where to Stay in Maui

Choosing the right place to stay in Maui can shape your entire vacation. For first-time visitors, West Maui (Lahaina, Ka’anapali, Kapalua) and South Maui (Kihei, Wailea) are the most popular areas thanks to their stunning beaches, great dining, and accessibility to major attractions.

We split our time between locations and it made for the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation without breaking the bank.

Ka’anapali has many upscale resorts with a more luxurious vibe and easy access to historic Lahaina. We spent half of our trip at the Hyatt Regency Maui and it was wonderful. There are many nice resorts in this area and I recommend booking in Maui’s shoulder seasons (April-May, September-October) for some great resort deals!

The other half our trip was spent in Kihei where travelers can find more affordable vacation rentals. The beaches in Kihei were beautiful and we had easy access to shops and dining.

Booking early is essential, especially during peak seasons like winter and summer.

Day 1: Arrival, Beach Time & Sunset in Maui

Your first day in Maui is a great opportunity to ease into Island life. If you’re like us and traveling from the east coast, you may not arrive in Maui until later in the day.

Take advantage of this time to pick up your rental car, check into your accommodation and  find some good food to eat.

If you have an earlier flight, the first day is perfect for some beach time. Depending on where you are staying, you can relax at Wailea Beach or Ka’anapali beach, two of the best beaches in Maui.

Looking for a place to catch the sunset on your first night? Ho’okipa Beach Park is a great option to watch surfers and spot sea turtles.

If the jet-lag isn’t taking over, you can end the day with a beachfront dinner at Mama’s Fish House, one of the best restaurants in Maui and the perfect end to your first day.

Pro Tip: Reservations are required for this popular spot!

Day 2: West Maui Adventure and Coastal Views

On your second day in Maui, explore the natural wonders of this amazing island.

Begin your morning at Nakalele Blowhole. This was one of my favorite stops on our recent trip to Maui! To access the blowhole, you will need to climb down jagged lava-rock. It is a much steeper hike than we expected but worth it to see the geyser-like effect created from the ocean waves.

Tip: Wear sturdy shoes! It is easy to slip with flip-flops, especially if the rocks are wet.

After Nakalele Blowhole, continue journey to Dragon’s Teeth located near Kapalua. This impressive coastline was formed by lava crashing against strong winds, the jagged rocks resemble giant dragon teeth. There are some great views here that make for stunning pictures so be sure to pack your camera!

If you’re anything like me, all this exploring has worked up an appetite. Take a coastal drive along Northwest Maui, known for it’s rugged beauty and stop to try the famous banana bread from Julie’s Roadside stand.

You can then spend the afternoon swimming or snorkeling at Kapula Bay, one of Maui’s best snorkeling spots.

For dinner, I recommend exploring Lahaina and eating at any of their popular restaurants. We enjoy Star Noodle for both the delicious food and amazing ocean views!

Day 3: Road To Hana Day Trip

Day three is my favorite day of the trip! Discover waterfalls, beaches and rainforest scenery in the epic Road to Hana day trip.

The Road to Hana is a 64 mile journey filled with twists, turns and multiple one-way bridges.

For this experience, you will want to get an early morning start. There is so much to see and do on the way to Hana Town, you’ll want as much daylight as possible. We began our journey around 7:30am and returned home just before sunset (I would not feel comfortable driving these roads after dark) so plan accordingly!

I highly recommend using a navigation app  during your Road to Hana experience. We used Shaka Guide and it made the trip 1000X better. The app plays like a podcast in your car telling you where to stop, when to turn, where the best bathrooms are and sharing stories about the culture and history of what you are passing. The best part? It continues working without cell service, something I seemed to regularly lack as we drove through the mountain.

Make sure you pack lots of water, snacks and cash (some vendors along the road to Hana still only accept cash).

Take your time and spend the day exploring everything this historical route has to offer!

Top stops along the Road to Hana

  • Twin Falls – Short hike to waterfalls
  • Ke’anae Peninsula – amazing coastal views
  • Wailua Falls – easy waterfall access
  • Wai’ānapanapa State Park – black sand beach (advanced reservations required)
  • Optional: Hike the Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls

Day 4: Snorkeling and Upcountry Maui Tour

The fourth day of  the trip is all about snorkeling with turtles and exploring local culture.

In the morning, book a Molokini Crater snorkeling tour to explore one of Maui’s best snorkeling spots. Most tours also include a stop at Turtle Town.

We booked an experience with the Pride of Maui via Viator and had the best time! The tour began in the harbor about 8am when we boarded the boat, had breakfast and enjoyed the ride out to the crater. During our snorkel expedition we saw so many different fish and coral. The water was crystal clear!

They provided lunch on the way to our second snorkel stop, Turtle Town, where we snorkeled with sea turtles and had a few turns on the slide off the back of the boat.

The boat returned to the harbor around 1pm leaving us with the rest of the afternoon to continue exploring.

In the afternoon, you can visit Makawao Town for art galleries and a glimpse into paniolo (cowboy) life. Spend some time wandering through the shops, boutiques and art galleries. There will often be working artists so you can watch glassblowers, wood carvers, sculptors and more!

End the night with a dinner in Kihei at one of their popular oceanside restaurants. We really enjoyed Coconuts Fish Cafe for a casual bite to eat.

Day 5: Haleakalā Sunrise and Beach Time

End your trip to Maui with a stunning sunrise and some relaxation.

Sunrise at Haleakalā is a world famous event and one of Maui’s most memorable experiences. It does take a little planning so below you will find some tips to make the most of your sunrise exploration.

  1. Make a Reservation – You will need a reserved spot to enter the park. Reservations can be made up to 60 days in advance. I recommend booking this as early as possible due to it’s popularity.
  2. Start Early – Depending on where you are staying in Maui, it can take up to 2 hours to drive to Haleakalā and up to the summit. While it may be a very early wake-up call, the views are worth it!
  3. Pack Layers – With the elevation of the summit, the temperature is typically in the 40 degree range. Be sure to pack layers to stay warm.
  4. Bring Snacks – There are restrooms in the park but no restaurants or gas stations.
Interested in a guided experience? There are many tours offered for sunrise at Haleakalā. This is a great option if you are not interested in driving the entire route. The tour will pick-up and drop-off at your hotel or condo, provide breakfast and a warm coat once you reach the summit. This is definitely a more relaxing way to enjoy the sunrise experience!

After such an early wake-up call, you may be needing a nap! Or at least some relaxation time. End your Maui adventure the same way we began, with an afternoon spent relaxing at one of the Island’s many beautiful beaches.

Palauea Beach and Big Beach in Makena are great options! You can also spend some time shopping for souvenirs in the shops at Kihei.
