Growing up in Kentucky, I was surrounded by two things; beautiful horse farms and bourbon. Driving through the rolling hills of Kentucky, you can see why so many people visit the Bourbon Trail each year. With more than 40 distilleries spread across the state, the Bourbon Trail is the ultimate way to dive into Kentucky’s rich bourbon history. With so many stops to choose from, it can be hard to know where to start. That’s where I come in! After exploring distilleries big and small, I’ve rounded up the 12 best distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail—from legendary names like Maker’s Mark and Buffalo Trace to hidden gems you might not have heard about.
In this local’s guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan the perfect bourbon adventure, including insider tips, what makes each stop unique, and how to make the most of your time on the trail.

The 12 Best Distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail
1. Maker’s Mark
Why visit? Maker’s Mark has to be one of the most iconic distilleries on the bourbon trail and is at the top of my list for the 12 best distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The distillery grounds in Loretto are stunning, with historic buildings, art installations, and a picturesque lake. Tours here walk you through every step of the bourbon-making process, from mash to barrel.
Don’t miss dipping your own bottle of Maker’s Mark in the famous red wax! This made for such a cool souvenir on our most recent visit and is a great way to end your visit.
Local Tip: This distillery is located down some very narrow country roads so be prepared and allow plenty of time to arrive.
2. Woodford Reserve
Why Visit? Woodford Reserve is located in the heart of horse country and is one of the only places that you will see a distillery and thoroughbred horses next to each other. Does it get more Kentucky than that?! The distillery itself is a National Historic Landmark, with limestone buildings and copper pot stills. The tours dive deep into Woodford’s small-batch process, and the grounds are some of the prettiest along the trail.
Local Tip: Plan a visit for the fall when the leaves are changing colors. It is a gorgeous setting on the distillery grounds.
3. Buffalo Trace
Why Visit? This distillery is not officially a part of the Bourbon Trail, however, no visit to Bourbon country would be complete without stopping here. Known for highly sought-after labels like Pappy Van Winkle and Blanton’s, this Frankfort distillery is the oldest continually operating distillery in the U.S.
Bonus: The tours are free! Yes, free! All tours and tastings are complimentary.
Local Tip: The tours at Buffalo Trace are in high demand. Tours are booked by online reservations and as of now, dates release on Wednesdays at 10AM EST. Dates are released up to 8 weeks in the future and I recommend being ready to book your reservation as soon as the time slot opens.

4. Four Roses
Why Visit? Four Roses stands out visually among Kentucky distilleries and is in my opinion, one of the best architecturally designed. The distillery is located along the Salt River, and has been producing smooth, mellow bourbon since 1888. The tours here are relaxed, offering insight into their unique recipes and yeast strains that create distinct flavors.
Local Tip: Four Roses also has a second location in Cox’s Creek for bottling and tastings. For history buffs and bourbon fans alike, it’s a stop worth making.
5. Jim Beam
Why Visit? Jim Beam is such a famous brand that it is a must-visit on your Kentucky Bourbon Trail experience. This distillery is located in Clermont, KY (right next to Bardstown) which makes it an easy stop if you’re trying to visit multiple distilleries in a weekend. Visitors can take a guided tour of the distilling process, see the rickhouses, and even hand-bottle a Knob Creek Single Barrel to take home.
Local Tip: The Knob-Creek bottling experience is definitely worth your time – you even complete it with your own thumbprint in the wax seal.
6. Wild Turkey
Why Visit? If you are a bourbon history buff than you will definitely want to check out Wild Turkey Distillery. Located in Lawrenceburg, KY, Wild Turkey is led by Jimmy Russell the “Buddha of Bourbon”. He is currently the longest tenured active, Master Distiller in the world! Tours include a peek at the massive rickhouses, where bourbon ages to perfection. Wild Turkey is known for bold flavors and high-proof expressions—perfect for those who like a stronger sip.
Local Tip: The Wild Turkey visitor center has some great views and is worth the stop!
7. Heaven Hill
Why Visit? Heaven Hill is located in Bardstown, KY, known as the Bourbon Capital of the world. This distillery is also the largest family-owned bourbon distillery in the world. Known for brands like Elijah Craig, Larceny, and Evan Williams, Heaven Hill offers a wide range of tastings for every palate. Their Bourbon Heritage Center is both educational and interactive, making it a great place to learn the history of America’s native spirit.
Local Tip: If you’re short on time, or trying to check multiple distilleries off of your list, this is an easy distillery to access with plenty of tasting options.
8. Angel’s Envy
Why Visit? This distillery is located in Louisville, KY and is a must-visit when you are in the city. This modern space focuses on small-batch bourbon finished in port wine casks, giving it a distinct flavor profile. The tours here are sleek and urban, offering a contrast to the distilleries you may visit in Bardstown or Versailles.
Local Tip: Their cocktail bar is a highlight, making it a fun stop for city explorers and for those who may not be super into Bourbon.

Why Visit? Bulleit Frontier is located just outside of Louisville. It is a relatively newer distillery and is known as the “modern frontier of whiskey”. With its glass-fronted still house and state-of-the-art facilities, it feels more like a modern craft brewery than a historic bourbon site.
The distillery also has an excellent on-site restaurant, serving bourbon-inspired cuisine. If you’re looking for a fresh, modern take on Kentucky bourbon, Bardstown Bourbon Company is a must-see.
Local Tip: Bardstown Bourbon Company wants to evoke a Napa Winery feel to their distillery. Visiting definitely feels luxurious!
11. Lexington Bourbon and Distilling Co
Why Visit? Located in the heart of downtown Lexington, Lexington Bourbon and Distilling Co is a great addition to a weekend spent exploring the city. Known for its bourbon and also its beer, this distillery offers a dual experience. Visitors can enjoy both spirits and craft brews on the same tour. It’s a perfect stop for those who love variety.

12. Lux Row Distillers
Why Visit? The final stop on my list of the 12 best distilleries on the Kentucky bourbon Trail is Lux Row Distillers.
With five distinct brands under one roof, Lux Row Distillers is definitely worth the trip. The tours are intimate, with friendly guides who walk you through the production process in detail. The tasting experiences here are often less crowded, giving it a relaxed feel compared to the larger distilleries. With beautiful grounds and approachable bourbon, Lux Row is a hidden gem on the trail.

If you are planning on visiting a couple stops along the Bourbon Trail, you’ll want a nice place to stay for a few nights. The Bourbon Trail is a great “long weekend” activity. Below, you will find some of my top recommendations for where to stay when enjoying your bourbon adventure.
Louisville:

Local Tips For Visiting the Bourbon Trail
If you’re planning your Bourbon Trail adventure, a little local knowledge can make the trip even better.
First, consider timing—spring and fall are the best seasons to visit. You’ll enjoy mild weather, beautiful Kentucky scenery, and plenty of bourbon-themed events. Summer can be hot and crowded, while winter tends to be quieter if you prefer fewer tourists.
Another key tip: book your distillery tours in advance. Some of the most popular spots, like Buffalo Trace or Maker’s Mark, sell out weeks ahead, especially on weekends. If you want a guided tasting or specialty experience, secure your tickets early.
When it comes to planning your route, keep it realistic. I recommend only visiting two distilleries per day. Depending on how long you linger for tours, tastings, and photos you may be able to add a third, however, the walking adds up!
While you’re there, don’t miss out on signature bourbon tastings and food pairings. Many distilleries offer chocolate pairings, bourbon cocktails, or even bourbon-infused meals at on-site restaurants. These experiences highlight just how versatile Kentucky bourbon can be.
