About Natural Bridge State Resort Park
The Natural Bridge arch is located within the Natural Bridge State Park in Slade, Kentucky. It is just minutes from the famous Red River Gorge geological area.
The park is located close to central Kentucky and is easily accessible. It is about an hour drive from Lexington or a two hour drive from Louisville. Hiking Natural Bridge is the perfect addition to a long weekend or an easy day trip if you live nearby. We visited Natural bridge recently as a weekend day trip and had the best time.
The Natural Bridge spans 78 feet in length and is 65 feet high. It is pretty wide at the top so if you have a fear of heights (like me) it is still enjoyable and you can see the stunning views without getting close to the edge.
Best Hiking Trails to Natural Bridge
There are multiple different options for hiking trails at Natural Bridge. They all allow for some great photographs and amazing views, but range in difficulty and length. There are 12 trails total and I have highlighted my top 4 recommendations below.
- Original Trail: Classic route, 0.5 miles, moderate incline, direct route to the bridge. This is the route that we typically take on the way up to the arch. There are some small sections of steps and plenty of benches and shelters if you need a break. We will typically park at the Hemlock Lodge to access this trail, however, there is also a public parking lot a little further down the road from the lodge where you can access the trailhead.
2. Balanced Rock Trail: Steeper climb but scenic and adventurous, .75 miles. This route has over 600 steps and is a bit longer than the original trail. I recommend this trail if you’re looking for a bit longer of a hike. A portion of this trail was closed on our most recent visit to Natural Bridge so be sure to look for signage along the trail signaling any closures.
3. Battleship Rock Trail: Moderate hike, .75 miles. This trail also leads to the top of Natural Bridge. It is a longer route than the classic trail as it tends to wind back and forth along the mountainside rather than using stairs to cut directly to the top. We enjoy using the classic trail on the way up and this trail on the way back down as they end back at the same trail head.
4. Sand Gap Trail: Longer loop for serious hikers (7.5 miles). This hike follows an old logging road and has a descent into the valley with a stream. This hike takes 4-6 hours to complete so be prepared for an all day excursion. Although it is a longer hike, the decrease in traffic allows for better wildlife sightings along the trail! This hike can be accessed either from the skylift parking lot or the top of Natural Bridge.

Scenic Views & Photography Spots
One of the best parts of hiking are the views at the top, right?! Natural Bridge definitely has no shortage of beautiful scenery and provides a great opportunity to snap some photographs.
We often see photographers at the top of the bridge taking their time getting the perfect photo of the landscape or wildlife. This is especially a popular photo spot in the fall when all the leaves are changing colors.
If you’re looking for additional viewpoints, make sure to check out Lookout Point, which offers a picture-perfect angle of the bridge from a distance, or Lovers Leap, one of the most photographed overlooks in the park. We took some pictures at both of these spots on our last trip.
Both spots are easily accessible from the main trails and give you a chance to capture the bridge in its full glory.
For the best photos, plan your hike early in the morning or just before sunset. This will also help you keep cool if hiking in the warmer months of the year.
Tips for Hiking Natural Bridge
When to Go: The best time of year to hike at Natural Bridge is either during the fall or spring. In the fall, the leaves are changing colors and the views are stunning. In the spring, the weather is beginning to warm up and everything is in bloom. If hiking in the summer, I’d recommend going early in the morning to avoid the heat (especially since there isn’t much shade at the top).
What to Bring: The length of hike you are planning on doing might determine what you bring with you, however, everyone should pack sturdy shoes, snacks and plenty of water. Some additional items you might want include sunscreen, a hat, camera, map and dry bag if you plan on doing any additional activities like kayaking.
Weather Considerations: Keep in mind the weather conditions when planning your trip. In the summer you will definitely want some sun protection. The fall and spring can see some rainier days, so be sure to pack layers and be careful as the sandstone rock on the trail becomes slippery when wet.
Safety: Stay only on marked trails and be mindful of the height. Natural Bridge is a high arch that has a steep drop-off, as do many parts of the trails. Be aware of your surroundings.
Parking & Crowds: Go early or on weekdays to avoid peak crowds. We like to park at Hemlock lodge for easy accessibility (and bathrooms). There is also a large public parking lot down the road if there is not availability at the lodge
