With stops spread across charming towns like Bardstown, Louisville, Lexington, and Frankfort, choosing the right home base can make your bourbon adventure smooth, fun, and unforgettable. The official Bourbon Trail has 60 destinations located in 27 Kentucky counties. However, there are even more distilleries, such as Buffalo Trace, that you have to visit on a trip to Bourbon country.

Best Towns For Your Bourbon Trail Stay
There are several different options for major towns to visit when exploring the Bourbon Trail. My top recommendations for towns to base your Bourbon Trail adventure are listed below.
Louisville
This city is a very popular destination for beginning your Bourbon Trail journey. With nightlife options and big-name distilleries, I recommend staying in Louisville if it’s your first time exploring the Bourbon Trail.
Additionally, if you’re traveling from out of state, the Louisville airport will be your best option for an airport with multiple different airline and flight time offerings.
Bardstown
If you’re looking to experience some small-town southern charm, Bardstown is the city for you!
Located about an hour drive from Louisville and Lexington, the “Bourbon Capital of the World” offers access to crowd favorites such as Maker’s Mark, Heaven Hill and Jim Beam.
Lexington
Known for horses and bourbon, Lexington is a great city (I may be biased since it is where I grew up).
Staying in Lexington will give you easy access to Woodford Reserve, Town Branch and is relatively close to Buffalo Trace.

Historic Stays:
Talbott Tavern (Bardstown) – This historic tavern and Inn is a must-visit in Bardstown. It is the oldest tavern in Kentucky, dating back to 1779.
They have a great restaurant. We stopped there for lunch on our recent visit to Bardstown and I would definitely go back.
After we finished our lunch we were able to take an audio tour of the tavern and learn all about its history (including seeing the bullet holes in the wall from the infamous outlaw, Jesse James).
The Grady Hotel (Louisville) – The Grady hotel is where Bourbon history meets southern hospitality. Located inside a historic building built in 1883, it was originally commissioned by a pharmacist as a medicinal bourbon apothecary.
Now this hotel boasts of luxury and is a definite stop on your visit to Louisville.
Luxury Hotels
The Brown Hotel (Louisville) – Located in close proximity to Louisville’s popular destinations, the Brown Hotel has been a local favorite for over a century. This classic and elegant hotel truly stands out and is perfect if you’re looking for a luxurious stay.
Griffin Gate Marriott (Lexington) – This resort and spa is the perfect weekend getaway. If you’re looking to add some time on the golf course, or a relaxing trip to the spa, this resort is a great option.
It is also situated right off of Newtown Pike in Lexington, providing easy access to the interstate and several distilleries.
The Trail Hotel (Bardstown) – This luxury hotel is at the top of my list for our next trip to Bardstown. With 95 boutique guest rooms this new hotel provides an upscale retreat in the heart of the Bourbon Capital of the World.

Quaint B&Bs
Bourbon Manor (Bardstown) – This local bed and breakfast is a great retreat. The Bourbon Manor is set in a building dating back to the 1800s.
With 10 guest rooms, every traveler can expect individual attention. The breakfast here has amazing reviews and may be worth a stay in itself!
The B&B also comes with access to a Bourbon Bar located next door with nightly drink specials.
Jailer’s Inn (Bardstown) – This B&B is in a prime location, just a ½ block from the court square in downtown Bardstown. There are 9 individual rooms and a full breakfast is provided. This stay is very unique as the building was actually used as a jail from 1797 – 1987.

Fairfield Inn and Suites (Bardstown) – Located just off the highway with easy access to many distilleries, this stay is great if you’re looking to just spend one night or are wanting something familiar.
Holiday Inn and Suites Downtown (Louisville) – This is a budget friendly option that still provides walking access to many destinations along the Bourbon Trail and other city activities.

Farm Stay
Maple Hill Manor (Close to Lexington) – This historic farm stay is the perfect experience for anyone looking to dive into the culture of Kentucky and even see some horses! Be sure to ask about their bourbon tasting packages.

I know not everyone is like me and has every trip planned with a color coded itinerary. However, a little planning goes a long way toward making your trip smooth and stress-free.
Some of the most popular distilleries, like Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve, often sell out weeks in advance, so be sure to book your tours early—especially if you’re traveling during peak season. Having your schedule lined up will help you make the most of your Bourbon Trail itinerary without missing out on must-visit stops.
I believe the Bourbon Trail is a great long weekend activity. 2-3 days is the perfect amount of time to explore the area, try different tours and tastings and still leave with the desire to return!
Keep in mind that you can realistically visit 2–3 distilleries per day; trying to squeeze in more often leaves you feeling rushed and the tours can be a lot of walking!
Transportation is another key part of Bourbon Trail planning. Many visitors choose to drive themselves. However, if you’d rather not worry about navigating after tastings, consider hiring a tour company or booking a shuttle service.

If you’re short on time, you can visit a couple of distilleries in just one day. However, spreading the trip over a few days lets you relax and enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.
What is the best town to stay in on the Bourbon Trail? It depends on the kind of experience you want! But my vote is Bardstown. The “Bourbon Capital of the World” makes a great home base with its central location to many distilleries.
Do I need to book distillery tours in advance? Yes! Many tours will book up weeks (if not months) in advance. Booking early ensures you’ll get the dates and times you want. Smaller distilleries may have more flexibility, but reservations are always recommended.
Can you do the Bourbon Trail without a rental car? If you are trying to navigate multiple areas of the Bourbon Trail, having a rental car is highly recommended. This will let you travel at your own pace and visit some of the distilleries, like Maker’s Mark, that aren’t located in a populated area.
