What Is The Kentucky Bourbon Trail?
The Bourbon Trail is an immersive bourbon experience throughout Kentucky. Through visiting different bourbon distilleries, tourists can “check off” locations on the Bourbon Trail. It is the ultimate way to learn about the birthplace of Bourbon and a great long weekend activity.
There are now 60 distilleries that are a part of the official Bourbon Trail, however, there are even more that are worth a visit!

How Much Does the Bourbon Trail Cost?
Let’s start with what to expect.
Most distillery tours cost between $25–$40 per person, and premium tastings (like single-barrel or masterclass experiences) can run $35–$60. If you are visiting for the first time, you can definitely just opt for the basic tours. They provide great info and give an overview of the distillery.
Add in gas, meals, and lodging, and a two-day trip for two people typically costs $700-$1000 — but that can drop significantly with smart planning.
Budget breakdown example:
- Distillery tours (2–3): $60–$80
- Lodging (1 night): $100–$150 (less for Airbnbs or motels)
- Meals & drinks: $100 – $150
- Transportation/gas: $30–$50
My husband and I recently took a trip to Bardstown to experience that area of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and our weekend trip cost $500.
Money-saving tip: Visit smaller, craft distilleries that offer free or low-cost tastings — or split tours between two travelers to sample more for less.
Budget-Friendly Distilleries to Visit
While big names like Maker’s Mark, Woodford Reserve, and Buffalo Trace are iconic, don’t overlook the hidden gems that often cost less — and sometimes feel more personal.
Buffalo Trace (Frankfort): While this distillery isn’t a part of the “official” Bourbon Trail, no trip to Kentucky would be complete without stopping at Buffalo Trace. The best part? They have completely free tours and tastings!
It’s one of the best-value stops and a must-add to your itinerary.
Wilderness Trail (Danville): The tours here are $23 per person. The ticket includes a tour, tasting and a souvenir whiskey glass. Great bundle!
Bardstown Bourbon Company: Great for blending modern innovation with traditional charm — and you can often skip the tour fee if you just stop for a drink or meal.
My husband and I recently walked around the grounds here for free and it was quite impressive.
Lux Row Distillers (Bardstown): A tour with a tasting flight is priced at $15. This may be the best deal on the Bourbon Trail!
Willett Distillery: Free to visit and walk the grounds; $25 tours are optional.
Pro tip: Aim for 2–3 distilleries per day to keep costs manageable. I personally prefer 2 per day as there can be quite a bit of walking involved.
Free & Low-Cost Bourbon Experiences
Even if you’re not doing a full tasting, there are tons of bourbon experiences that don’t cost a dime:
- Visit Whiskey Row in Louisville for photo ops and distillery storefronts.
- Stop by the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History in Bardstown (free entry, donations welcome).
- Explore downtown Bardstown. This town has been voted the most beautiful small town in America by USA Today and it is easy to see why! On our recent trip to Bardstown, we spent quite a bit of time walking the main street and browsing in the shops and boutiques.
Where to Stay on the Bourbon Trail (Without Overspending)
You don’t need a luxury inn to enjoy a great bourbon weekend. Consider these affordable lodging options:
Airbnb stays in Bardstown, Frankfort, or Lexington – $90–$130/night.
Budget-friendly boutique hotels like the Talbott Inn or Charred Oak Inn.
Chain hotels along the Bourbon Trail (Holiday Inn, Best Western) for reliable amenities and free breakfast.

Budget Travel Tips for the Bourbon Trail
Here’s how to make the most of your experience without overspending:
- Visit on weekdays: There will be fewer crowds, more tour options and hotel rates will be cheaper than staying on the weekend.
- Book tours directly: Book directly through the distilleries website to avoid third party booking fees.
- Pack snacks and water: Some distilleries will have food options but they can be pricey and limited. Pack a cooler with some snacks and water to get you through until lunch/dinner.
- Designate a driver or share a shuttle: Some tours offer multi-distillery packages that save money and keep you safe. However, most of the guided tours are on the pricier side.
You don’t need a huge budget to experience the magic of Kentucky bourbon. With a little flexibility and local tips, you can tour world-famous distilleries, discover small-batch gems, and soak up the heritage that makes the Bluegrass State so special — all without emptying out your wallet.
The Kentucky Bourbon Trail on a budget is proof that great bourbon doesn’t have to come with a big price tag.
