Best Areas to Stay in Lexington
Lexington is not that big of a city but where you stay can definitely play a part in what activities you have in close proximity. I have highlighted the main areas in and near Lexington to help you plan your accommodation location.
Downtown Lexington – The downtown area will offer plenty of nightlife and walking access to many popular attractions. If you’re looking to be in the heart of the action and plan on visiting lots of restaurants and bars, I recommend booking a stay downtown.
Chevy Chase/Woodland Triangle – The Chevy Chase area will offer more of an upscale option. This area tends to be a little more bougie than downtown but if you’re looking for instagram worthy scenery, boutique shopping and charming cafés, then this is the stay for you!
Horse Country (Keeneland and Versailles Road) – In town for the races at Keeneland? Or touring some of the Bourbon Trail? It doesn’t really get more “Kentucky” than staying in the heart of horse country. This area will give you easy access to horse farms, distilleries and the airport in case you are visiting from out of town.
Near the University of Kentucky – Staying near the University is a great option, especially if you’re visiting for a short weekend. Combine your trip with a UK sporting event and you’re in for a treat! I’ve been a UK fan all my life and the city really shows up to support!
How to Choose the Right Stay for Your Trip
When planning your Lexington getaway, where you stay can completely shape your experience. Whether you’re coming for a weekend of bourbon tasting, horse farm tours, or a relaxing Southern escape, the city has options to fit every travel style.
For couples, boutique inns and romantic farm stays offer the perfect Bluegrass charm. Picture waking up to rolling horse pastures, sipping coffee on a wraparound porch, and ending the day with a cozy dinner downtown. Many historic bed and breakfasts near Keeneland and Versailles blend luxury with that unmistakable Kentucky hospitality.
For families, space and convenience are key. Airbnbs and hotels with suites provide room to spread out — plus full kitchens and easy access to Lexington’s family-friendly attractions like the Kentucky Horse Park and Jacobson Park. Staying just outside the city can also mean quieter evenings and beautiful farm views.
For solo travelers, staying downtown is ideal for walkability and connection. You’ll be steps from local coffee shops, bars, and restaurants, as well as near Lexington’s vibrant street art and historic sites. Modern hotels in downtown offer comfort, safety, and convenience — all great perks for exploring independently.
